Anchored in Faith

St. John the Evangelist Parish

Our Catholic Faith is at the center of all we do and are at Delphos St. John's.  We are blessed to be affiliated with the The Toledo Diocese and supported by our local St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church.

Rev. Jeffery Walker
Pastor of St. John the Evangelist, Delphos;
St. John the Baptist, Landeck;
St. Patrick, Spencerville

Dear Friends,
To our Blue Jays—past, present, and future—I extend a warm welcome on behalf of St.
John’s Parish. Our mission at St. John’s is to lead the people of our community to Jesus
Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:15). As the largest ministry of
St. John’s Parish, our Catholic School is an important and wonderful way of advancing
that mission and bringing the children and teenagers of our community
to an encounter with Jesus.

Striving for academic excellence, our students are seekers of truth. The truths of history
and the sciences, the truths of the arts and the humanities—all integrated into a pursuit
of the Truth that comes from God. Encountering the Word made flesh, our students find
the fullness of Truth in the person of Jesus Christ, the One who called
himself The Truth.

Our school serves the needs not only of the mind, but also of the heart, teaching not
only facts but a whole way of living. In the hallways or in the church, on the field or on
the court, in works of mercy and in their lives at home, our students seek to learn a way
of living rooted in love of God and neighbor and encompassing the whole human
person. They do this by learning from the One who called himself The Way.

Our school seeks to prepare students for life after graduation. We recognize that we are
preparing the future leaders of our community, the future leaders of our Church, and the
future leaders of families. Recognizing that we were made for Heaven, our school also
prepares students for Eternal Life. Indeed, St. John Paul II reminds us that “the ultimate
goal of all Catholic education is salvation in Jesus Christ.” Our students succeed in this
life and in the life to come because they know the One who called himself The Life.

Parents are the first and foremost educators of their children. When you choose St.
John’s Catholic School, we take seriously our responsibility to partner with you in the
education of your children. For over a century, St. John’s has been educating the
children of our greater Delphos community and we welcome you to be part of this next
century of excellence as part of our Blue Jay family.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Jeffery Walker

Campus Ministry

Father Thomas Hunyor
Priest and School Chaplain

Each and every year of life is filled with surprises. This year, there was none more exciting than having our own pastor, Fr. Dennis Walsh, named Bishop elect of the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa! This is a significant honor for our parish, school, and for our Diocese. While Fr. Walsh will be dearly missed, we are immensely grateful for his leadership, and spiritual fatherhood.

Reflecting on my second year as chaplain of our beloved St. John I can say with confidence that the spiritual life of the students, faculty, and staff continues to deepen! This year with the help of Mr. Lee and Mr. Stant, we refocused our efforts to make St. John first and foremost Christ-centered. As we know, our Catholic faith is the reason for the existence of our school, the root of the education we pass on, and the foundation of our worldview and lives.

A few highlights from the 2023-24 academic year are: our annual retreat for our faculty; a field trip to Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati and to the Franciscan Daughters of Mary women’s religious community; and having several of the high school boys join the men of our parishes in a Lenten program called Exodus 90. These are only a few of the many great things happening in our school but they show the importance of our faith and the spiritual growth of our Blue Jays.

I am thankful to be returning for the 2024-25 academic year and look forward to leading our students and staff even closer to Christ.

Mrs. Wendy Gerstner
Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry
419-692-5371 ext. 3011

THANK YOU for your generous donations last year to the Living Christ Campaign. These funds are the major contributor for me being hired to evangelize our youth and young adults with a new committed desire and purpose. Past and continued support is crucial in our efforts to lead and encourage these groups in our community and I am blessed to be here with you.

I began my journey back in June. Since then we have done much with Youth and Young Adult Ministry here at St. John the Evangelist Parish and School. Over the summer we created a beautiful space for all teens and young adults. This space is being used to teach and lead youth and young adults growing both in their faith and with each other. The youth room/my office is located in what has been affectionately called the “Drive Thru”, in the lower level corner room on the elementary side of the school outside of the cafeteria area.

After our speaker Jason Evert presented at the Parish and school, I began teaching all 7-12th grades Theology of the Body for a few weeks during their religion classes. That was a great way for me to begin to get to know the students and for the students to know they have a special place reserved for them on campus.

My role has been ever-changing and evolving with Fr. Dennis' new appointment and Fr. Jeff joining us. Here are most of the areas I am currently serving:
  • The 6th grade girls - once a week with faith formation and character building with Mrs. Haehn
  •  All 8th graders, their families, and sponsors - Confirmation prep and retreat
  • Students for Life Group Advisor
  • Catholic Athletes for Christ - helping Mr. Knott as needed
  • March for Life trip to DC in January - Coordinator (FYI: we are taking our own bus this year which is very exciting!)
  •  Working with a team, including Fr. Hunyor, to best meet the needs of DSJ and community students and coordinate all 9-12th grade retreats
  •  A NEW high school youth group is underway! We typically meet on Monday evenings at 6:30pm.
  • We are beginning a Young Adult Group at the Parish as well.
SO many wonderful faith filled opportunities are within our grasps here at Delphos St. John’s. I am beyond excited to see how the Lord will accomplish His goals here!

Ms. Kathleen Wreede
Pastoral Associate
419-692-5371 ext. 3166

The role of the Pastoral Associate is to help plan the many masses that our students are involved with during the week and the weekend, to assist our pastor in the education of all of our parishioners and to provide support and classes for those wishing to join the Church. Our elementary students - EB-6 - attend mass every Thursday Morning at 8:00 a.m. Junior High and High School attend mass on Friday's at 8:00 a.m.

The Pastoral Associate and the teachers in the parish and school work with our 8th graders to prepare for Confirmation and our 2nd graders to prepare for First Holy Communion.  These sacraments are an extremely important part of a young person's journey to becoming a member of the Catholic Church and forming a relationship with Jesus Christ!

See you at church!
Ms. Wreede

We have some GREAT opportunities coming up for our youth this summer!!

As you see, our traditional VBS will transition to Totus Tuus this next summer.  This is an impactful National Program that reaches thousands of young people for Christ every summer. Hosted in as many as 50 arch/dioceses across North America, it inspires active stewards, fruitful vocations and a lifelong love for the Church. We are SUPER excited to be able to bring this to St. John the Evangelist Parish for those in grades 1-8!

Totus Tuus is a Catholic summer youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic Faith through catechesis, evangelization, Christian witness and Eucharistic worship. The goal of Totus Tuus is to help young people grow in the understanding of, and strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ. It is only by establishing a real and personal relationship with Him that we can be led to love of the Father in the Spirit and so be made sharers in the life of the Holy Trinity.
"I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me" (John 14:6)
Totus Tuus strives to bring our faith to life by creating a balance between knowledge of the meaning of the Sacraments and an authentic Sacramental life.

Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to vocations in the young people we serve as well as among the teachers. This is accomplished by placing special emphasis on the importance and necessity of prayer, Eucharistic devotion and Marian devotion, in addition to catechetical instruction and formation in the Catholic Faith.

Questions may be directed to Kathleen Wreede at the above. Additional information can be found by reading: overview_of_totus_tuus.pdf

High School Students - we have some AMAZING things planned for you too! Please see the flyer above.  Additional registration information forthcoming.  Questions may be directed to Wendy Gerstner at the above.
